DOG BITE PREVENTION

Summer is here and everyone is spending a lot more time outside. This is a good time to be aware of the do’s and don’ts of approaching unfamiliar dogs. Dog bites are not good for us or the dog, but the good news is bites are preventable.

According to the Humane Society of the United States:
1. Never approach an unfamiliar dog, especially one who’s tied or confined behind a fence or in a car.
2. Don’t pet a dog, even your own, without letting him see and sniff you first.
3. Never turn your back and run away. A dog’s natural instinct will be to chase and catch you.
4. Don’t disturb a dog while:
• Sleeping
• Eating
• Chewing on a toy
• Caring for puppies

ALWAYS ASSUME THAT A DOG WHO DOES NOT KNOW YOU MAY SEE YOU AS AN INTRUDER OR A THREAT!

PARENTS - Be especially watchful when small children are around dogs. Babies and toddlers cannot understand dog behavior so it is up to us grownups to supervise.

What to do if a dog bites you.
1. Try not to panic.
2. Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and warm water.
3. Contact your physician for additional care and advice.
4. Report the bite to the local animal care and control agency.

Do you remember how your son’s eyes lit up when his new puppy licked his face for the first time? Or how careful you were to choose just the right kitten for your daughter's birthday?
